Q: I just purchased US 1000 3rd edition portable ultrasound. I read that this model does not heat up, but should the skin feel warm after a treatment if the machine is working correctly? I did a 15 minute treatment on my shoulder and my skin still felt cold to the touch. Just curious if it’s working correctly. Thanks for your input!

The output from the unit is always fixed at an ultrasonic wave frequency of 1 MHz, which refers to the penetration of the ultrasound. Frequency has an inverse relationship to the penetration, so a 1 MHz wave penetrates deeper than a 3 MHz wave. This is important when considering what area of your body you are looking to treat. It may be more effective to treat an area with less depth of tissue, such as your knee, with a greater frequency-producing unit, as opposed to a more fleshy area such as your arm, with a 1 MHz frequency unit. Most portable ultrasound devices on the market only produce 1 MHz, as opposed to more advanced clinical units, although this does not mean that you can not still use the therapy on such an area of the body. As for the 3 modes, Low, Medium, and High, these refer to the power output or intensity of the ultrasonic wave, measured in W/cm². It essentially refers to the total amount of vibrational energy being delivered per cm². Intensity is important because it describes the force at which the vibrations are applied, too much of which could potentially damage the treated tissue and result in pain.

Megahertz is a unit of electromagnetic wave frequency equal to 1 million Hz. Therapeutic ultrasound machines typically have a frequency of 1 or 3 MHz. The frequency of the ultrasonic wave is important in that there is an inverse relationship between a higher frequency and depth of penetration (the higher the frequency, the less the penetration). Depending on the area of the body you would like to treat, you may want a lower frequency of 3 MHz for an ankle, knuckle, elbow, knee, etc. as those parts require less penetration for a better targeted treatment, whereas your back, shoulder, hip, etc. may require a treatment at 1 MHz for adequate penetration. It is most common for home ultrasound devices to have a frequency of 1 MHz.

The US 1000 does not feature a pre-warming soundhead for comfort like its more advanced counterpart, the "US Pro 2000" which is also stronger on the Low, Medium, and High settings. The US Pro 2000 also operates at a 100% duty cycle on the High setting, specifically, meaning it is a continuous pulse ultrasound, which tends to be recommended most often by many physical therapists for greater therapeutic value and effectiveness, compared to pulsed ultrasound output.

Objectively speaking, Yes. The unit could indeed be used for aqua therapy if only submerging the aluminum soundhead. However, the depth of the soundhead on the US 1000 is not very large, so from a practical application standpoint, it would probably be a little bit difficult to use effectively. Our other portable option, the US Pro 2000 has a little more depth to work with on the soundhead and is definitely the more popular of the 2 devices.

When the LED is in green color, the ultrasound is in Low mode; press On/Off button
again, the LED will turn to orange color, which is Medium mode; press
On/Off button once again, the LED will turn to red color, which is High mode.
When you adjust the intensity each time, you can hear a beep sound. To return
output to low level, just press On/Off button one more time. When the device is
working, you can hear 2 beep sounds every 5 minutes.
